Old Testement Beliefs: Losing the Holy Spirit

Create in me a clean heart oh God… Cast me not away from thy presence

oh Lord and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me..

I wondered why people cried when they sang this, It’s because it’s bad theology.

It projects the Old Testament habitation economy on to the New Testament where the Spirit indwells the believer. Part of what may fuel this confusion is the idea that God does not change and is always the same. Old Testament kings, leaders judges and prophets had an anointing of the Spirit that would come on them and in some cases could leave also.  Lots of bad worship songs glean from the Psalms, funny though, we would never hear a song called “My Self-Righteousness” there is a lot of that in the Psalms also, because in the O.T all a believer had for the most part was their own righteousness. Please excuse that last gross over simplification

Using David or Samson as an example of the Spirit leaving a believer is still a popular analogy ( in some circles) to warn a believer they can still lose it. “My Spirit shall not always strive with man”is another one often used. however in context God was going to destroy the world with a flood and only eight souls were saved. The sad part is the crippling effect this notion has on those who desire to spread the good news of the Kingdom, for one reason, it aint good news.. Also, this notion stifles the grace of God that enables a believer to do what they could otherwise not do on their own.(eg. Have grace for others while spreading the good news)

Grieving the Holy Spirit is not a good thing, however does He finally get sick of us and leave? I suppose a case could be made for that but not from these texts I have mentioned. Also, I would spill too much ink trying to answer something I wouldn’t know for sure anyways.

Was Adam Immortal before The Fall?

Why does God permit evil? The question itself seems a bit strange. Why then does he allow evil? That sounds a bit strange also. Adam was not “allowed” or “permitted” to eat of the … Continue reading
